VISUAL ARTS TEACHER

Candidates should ideally have the following -

- Experience in teaching IB (or other university entrance qualifications – ‘A’/’AP’ or similar)

-Ability to give our students general information about plastic arts as a common language for all cultures, and to ensure that students gain different perspectives and interpretation techniques about various artistic forms and opinions.

-Ability to help the students develop creativity, observation and interpretation skills as well as practical skills through applied work,

-Ability to develop the students’ applications of drawing techniques, three dimensional forms, perspective, printing techniques and design work. 

-Ability to have students carry out applied photography and studio work,

-Ability to provide students with guidance during workshops related to their researches, observations, documentary activities and interpretations associated with the history of art and latest artistic and cultural events.

-The appropriate qualifications to be a teacher of IB Visual Arts, arts and photography.

COURSE DETAILS - ART

FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT

In the Fine Arts Department there are 6 music teachers and 4 visual art teachers. We have 2 art rooms, 1 photography room, 1 photographic studio, 1 dark room and 2 ceramic rooms, 3 music rooms, 5 practice rooms. We teach art for two hours a week, but in IB classes art teachers teach five hours a week.

Our department teaches art, photography, ceramics, history of art, IB visual arts, music (instrumental classes), IB music. The fully-equipped school auditorium seats 1200 and regular shows, dramas and musical concerts are presented.

ART LESSON-Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12

Art lessons are given in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. There are 2 periods in a week. 

9TH GRADE:

Purpose:

To reveal their own creative power through plastic arts training.

Course Materials: Powder Pastel, Body Colour, 4 White Johnson Painting Papers, B Series Painting Pencil Set, High Quality Water Colour Paint Brush

Course Outline:

With basic Plastic Arts Training we aim to:

Teach point, line, texture, light-shadow, form, shape, colour, perspective and painting techniques (charcoal pencil, watercolour, powder pastel, body colour).

10TH GRADE:

Purpose:

To allow them to feel the satisfaction/ joy of artistic competency and develop aesthetic awareness.  To make them understand that creativity and originality are in the foreground in design.

Course Outline:

Application of creativity, design, three dimensional arrangements, pattern drawing and colour drawing techniques in art education. 

11TH GRADE:

Purpose:

To get acquainted with works of art and develop the skills of searching and investigating their historical development, to develop an awareness of contemporary and broader opinions.

Course Materials: Powder Pastel , Body Colour, 4 White Johnson Painting Papers, B Series Painting Pencil Set, High Quality Water Colour Paint Brush

Course Outline: Application of still life, landscape, abstract painting, and drawings from live models and dummies and creative graphic design in art education.

12TH GRADE:

Purpose:

To gain an understanding the importance of fine arts and its contributions to life in the fullest sense.  To develop enhanced visual understanding of artistic creations.

Course Outline:

Introductory graphic design activities, contemporary art trends, Turkish art, and pattern designs from a live model, reproduction commentaries and the analysis of works of art.         

PHOTOGRAPHY Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Photography lessons are given in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. There are 2 periods a week. 

9TH GRADES:

(Introduction to Photography) 

PURPOSE: To allow the students to gain an aesthetic view of the art of Photography; to learn technical photographic reading; to enable them to carry out personal photography projects and to acquire and further enhance technical and artistic skills on taking and printing photographs; as well as to develop their visual, intellectual, social, critical and creative sides through a unique tool of expression and enhance their capacity for authentic thinking and creating.

TOPICS: Photograph 1 has been planned as a complementary course for the photography courses the students will take in the coming years.  Composition in photography (texture, patterns, form, rhythm, harmony, perspective, quality, motion, timing), differences in technique (lens, machines, filters, films, black-white photos), differences in form (documentary, interview, press, war, nature, travel, architecture, underwater, experimental, and demo photography), differences in composition (sorting, simplicity, aesthetical dose, symmetry,  sharpness, colour perspective, speed, contrast, light, golden ratio, completeness and balance). The students are introduced to lenses and cameras, films and black-white photographs. . Black-white, reversal film and digital photography techniques are taught.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: The students need to have manual or digital cameras (with SLR or higher than 8 megapixel lens).

PHOTOGRAPHY 2 

PURPOSE: To develop the students’ aesthetic appreciation within  the world of Photography; to learn technical photographic reading; to enable them to acquire and further enhance technical and artistic skills on taking and printing photographs; as well as to develop their visual, intellectual, social, critical and creative sides through a unique tool of expression and enhance their capacity for authentic thinking and creating, to accurately register the surface properties of objects and to help them develop their visual mental perspectives.

TOPICS: The courses Photograph 1, Photograph 2 and Photograph (studio) have been planned as complementary courses. The students work on basic manipulation, on black-and-white as well as colour photography, film development, colour digital printing, filtered shooting, object and macro shootings, shadow silhouette shootings, colour shootings, manipulation, shooting and printing techniques. 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: The students need to have manual or digital cameras (with SLR or higher than 8 megapixel lens).

GRADE 10 TOPICS OF THE PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE

11TH GRADE:

PHOTOGRAPHY 3

PURPOSE: To introduce the students to the Art of Photography and photographic artists; to enable them to carry out personal photography projects and to acquire and further enhance technical and artistic skills on taking and printing photographs; as well as to develop their visual, intellectual, social, critical and creative side through a unique tool of expression. The course will help the students perceive and project the universal appeal of photography with its unparalleled ability to freeze a certain “moment” of time, recording memories and relaying ideas and thoughts.

TOPICS: The programmes Photograph 2, Photograph 1 and Photograph (studio) have been planned as complementary courses. Photograph 2 focuses on technical training and the History of Photography.  The students work on using the “dark room” and the “photograph camera” (compact, reflex and digital), on black-and-white as well as in colour photography, film development, colour digital printing, posing, principles of lighting, natural habitat and action, framing, digital manipulation, shooting and printing techniques.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: The students need to have manual or digital cameras (with SLR or higher than 8 megapixel lens).

12TH GRADE:

PHOTOGRAPHY 4

PURPOSE: To introduce the students to the Art of Photography and photograph artists; to enable them to carry out personal photography projects and to acquire and further enhance technical and artistic skills on taking and printing photographs; as well as to develop their visual, intellectual, social, critical and creative side through a unique tool of expression and enhance their capacity for authentic thinking and creating.

TOPICS: The programme has been planned as a complementary course for Photograph 3, Photograph 1 and Photograph 2 programmes. The Photograph (studio) programme focuses on artistic photography projects. The students work on “advanced dark room and black-and-white techniques”, “advanced and experimental studio techniques”, indoor-outdoor shooting, principles of studio lighting, portrait-figure-still life shots and authentic photograph design.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: The students need to have manual or digital cameras (SLR lens).

CERAMICS Grades 11-12

The Ceramics course is offered in Grades 11 and 12. There are 2 periods in a week. 

Purpose / Course Material / Course Outline: The purpose of the course is to enhance the students’ ability, creativity, research and evaluation skills, producing authentic designs and work, obtaining two and three dimensional visuals through design and transforming these into three dimensional form as well as the knowledge and skills pertaining to distinguishing raw material, preparing the clay material, moulding, drying, kiln-drying and glazing, industrial production techniques and quality assessments.

The course is given through two periods per week.

The elective ceramics course introduces students to the art of ceramics and enables them to recognize that such materials and equipment are available for use in diverse fields and to bring forth their creativity.

Our school has two rooms dedicated to ceramic/glass work. These two separate rooms which incorporate the ceramic/glass art workshop and the kiln workshop respectively have been designed in close proximity on the same floor so that they can also be used by other classes.

  • The equipment to be used in the projects throughout the year include two ceramic kilns and one glass fusion kiln, a clay mill, glaze mill, potter's wheels and press mold.
  • Throughout the year, projects are developed on industrial ceramics, potter’s wheel, press glass molding, fusion, plaster mould, sculpture, wallboards, garden statues and effigies.
  • The projects are exhibited on the Sevgi Gönül Art Night and in diverse locations.
  • There are no required course materials.
  • The students are expected to bring with them casual wear such as overalls or a shirt and sweat pants.  Wearing these only during the class period are necessary for them to be able to work unconstrained.

ELECTIVE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) VISUAL ARTS COURSE:

The International Baccalaureate visual arts course is given in Grades 11 and 12 (soon to be 10 and 11). The programme is composed of two sections, plastic arts and modern visual arts.

PURPOSE: To introduce and endear visual arts and art activities to the students;

To enable students to acquire general information on plastic arts as a common language of expression among all cultures;

To ensure that the students gain the competency of their own particular perspective and interpretation on diverse art styles and trends;

To develop the students’ creativity, observation and interpretation skills as well as hand skills through applied work.

CONTENT: The IB Visual Arts and Modern Arts courses are five periods per week. The Visual Arts course is given either at standard or higher level. During this programme, applied in the final two years of high school, the students are required to prepare a sketchbook parallel to the applied workshop projects they carry out. The applied workshop projects enable the students to work on numerous topics, techniques and material within their area of interest. 

For the IB Plastic Arts programme, drawing techniques, three dimensional forms, perspective, printing techniques and design work. 

For the IB Modern Arts programme, photography and studio work, black-and-white printing, movie production, video and digital art.

Also, the topics are applied with different material and techniques for Plastic and Modern Arts.

Sketchbooks: These are kept parallel to the workshop activities and contain the research, observations, documents, comments and suggestions of the students.

At the end of this two-year programme, the personal exhibitions and research books of the students are assessed by an examiner assigned by the IB Organization.

ART HISTORY COURSE – Grades 10, 11 and 12

Art History Courses are given in Grades 10, 11 and 12. These are 2 periods per week. 

The Art History Course aims to introduce the art production that has accompanied all stages of human history since antiquity. It focuses on the styles and trends of various eras as well as major artists and their works in the fields of painting, sculpture and architecture that reach out through the ages from antiquity through the middle ages up to the modern ages. It allows the students to reflect on the works and perspective of art in the past in order to guide the discussions of the works of today and tomorrow.

Purposes of the Course:

The course aims at enabling the students to
* Acquire the awareness of protecting and preserving the past,

* Recognize and interpret national and international works of art,

* Improve their understanding of the works of art and their importance in society,

* Develop their ability to evaluate, comprehend and tolerate opposing views,

* Become creative and productive individuals who are prone to research in their fields and can easily comment and implement in line with their abilities,

* Develop a personality that is open to innovation, with a visual sensitivity and a broad perspective of the world as well as versatile appreciations,

* Apply the critical attitude they use to evaluate a work of art also to other objects composing the cultural environment,

* Acquire the competency to appreciate artists,

* Make a habit of visiting exhibitions and museums,

* Analyse also the cultural works and national character of the geography which harbour universal works,

* Develop the awareness to appreciate and protect historical works,

* Evaluate the soul and aesthetic endeavour in the essence of works of art as well as the message that the artist wishes to relay to the people of the world.
