What is NASA GLOBAL FRIENDSHIP THROUGH SPACE EDUCATION?

Once a week every Monday afternoon a group of Koc students have been working on a project called Global Friendship through Space Education.
This project includes performing activities using NASA Educational products. Global Friendship Through Space Education project aims to connect teachers and students of two different countries - Turkey and United States - using space education.
This project started in 2002. Global friendship group has been working on it since then.
In this program students not only learn basic concepts of Space Science but also have opportunity to build friendships. The students have also chance to learn coordination, cooperation and group work.
Activities:
1. mission patch

Astronauts of a particular mission work together to design emblems to represent their mission. As Global friendship team we also plan to create different patches that can represent our mission - learning space concepts and building friendship.

Before start we went through several steps. We first discuss about the progression of patches from medieval times to current space patches. We also talk about the different purposes of patches. We identified space patches and learned about patch symbolism. By the help of the information we gathered we were ready to create our own mission patch.

Making patches was a fun and educative journey. They promote team thinking and help us to know each other better. Let us show you our journey:

There are 3 astronauts that represent 3 of us. 4 big stars that represent our teachers, 23 little stars represent the students in the activity, Global Friendship. The red shaded part of the Earth is Turkey. There are 3 flags. The American flag on the left, our country Turkey's flag in the middle and our school (Koç Elementary School)'s flag at the right. On the astronaut's uniforms there are the initials of us in the group, Tayla AYKAÇ, Beril MEŞE, Mevsim BETİL. |

The maps of Turkey mean that Turkey covers the whole world. The flag of Turkey represent our freedom. Earth and Koç Symbol symbolizes that our school is international. The horn is the symbol of Koç Company. The map of Istanbul shows where we live. At the bottom left of the patch you can find the pictures our school and the school busses. The sun symbolizes the brightness. Green and blue are the colors of the clean environment. |

U.A.S.S. is the abreviation of our surnames : Melis (U)ğurlu, Cansu (A)lver, Zeynep Ece(S)ümer,Mert (S)evgi.
"Peace Around the World" sembolizes that we are bringing peace to the World from space. This is also our missions name.
Delight 34 is our shuttle's name. "Delight" is our national food. "34" is register number of Istanbul- our home town.
The Koç School symbol which is at the top of the shuttle shows our school. The Turkish flag shows that the shuttle is Turkish shuttle. The smiling face in the shuttle shows that we are happy to bring peace to the world. Five stars represents our Works quality.

Three stars symbolize the number of people in our group. Flags flag shows the school and country that we come from. The Earth's picture from space and the shuttle represents our work about space and world wide friendship. The shuttle traveling in the space represents our activity about space & friendship that makes us feel like we travel in the space. |

At the end of the Summit week all teachers have been very happy to see their students' progress.
As a result of the activities that students performed during the camp, all groups came together and came up with a proclamation. It includes really important matters in the name of world unity and friendship. |
INTERNATIONAL SPACE CAMP HUNTSVILLE

| In the week of July 24-30, 2004 there had been International Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.. Including the United States teachers of the year, there were participants as teachers and students from all over the world. The participant countries were Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland. Dilmac Yakupoğlu, Erdem Şahin and Begum Topçuoğlu attended the International Camp representing Koc School and Turkey. |

| For one week long they not only had the chance to build very good friendships with teachers and students from all parts of the world but also they were given an intense education in aerospace technology, space exploration and discovery as applied to global space and rocketry programs. |
